New Technical Standard Work Team Formed:
      NRCS 382 Fence
A Work Team has been formed to revise the Natural Resources Conservation Service's (NRCS) 382 Fence Technical Standard.  The Work Team is a mix of individuals with experience in grazing lands, fencing and safety engineering.

The Department of Commerce (Comm) is Joining SOC
Throughout the past few years, Comm has cooperated with SOC in multiple fashions. This culminated with Comm's agreement to become a formal member of SOC and solidify our working partnership. As a result, in 2006, a new Memorandum of Agreement between the SOC partners was adopted. And in 2007, Comm put to work its new responsibilities to steer a work team charged with developing a new Infiltration Trench technical standard. This move will benefit the technical standard users throughout the state. We look forward to working with Comm.

New Year, New Plan
To kick off the new year SOC released the 2006 - 2007 Work Plan, the 2005 Accomplishment Report and the Third Edition of the Technical Standards Process Handbook. As we look forward to the activities of 2006 we wish all of you success in your endeavors in the coming year.

  • The 2006-2007 Technical Standards Process Work Plan outlines what activities SOC will undertake during the next two years.

  • Download a copy of the 2005 Technical Standards Process Accomplishment Report and catch up on SOC activities and achievements that happened over the past year.

  • The Handbook was revised to better describe a few parts of the SOC process, notably the addition of the Comm to SOC  and guidelines for joint custodianship of technical standards.

Urban Technical Standards
SOC is looking to expand our list of draft reviewers familiar with urban technical standards.  If you are interested in participating in this role contact the SOC Coordinator.

SOC-UWEX Partnership
The UWEX Environmental Resource Center (ERC) provides staff time to help SOC work teams edit and produce companion documents designed to accompany technical standards.  These companion documents are targeted for educational purposes.  Extension periodically assists with other graphic materials such as the SOC display Board.  See the SOC Work Plan page for more details.

Milking Center Waste

A Milking Center Waste Assessment Workshop was held in December 2002 to evaluate treatment methods and to discuss a procedure to advance the technology.  Recommendations put forth by the workshop attendees can be viewed by following this link: Workshop Recommendations.  A Workshop Summary is available as well.

The Milking Center Wastewater Work Team is considering the recommendations put forth in this workshop for inclusion in a new technical standard describing treatment methods being created for the NRCS.  See the Work Teams page to view progress.
